News LA Galaxy vs Philadelphia Union

The Los Angeles Galaxy will host the Philadelphia Union on July 4 at the Home Depot Center. This will be the only regular season meeting this season for the teams.

Both teams enter the match coming off of one-goal losses from June 30. The Galaxy are in sixth place in the Western Conference with 20 points through 17 matches while the Union are in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points through 14 matches. Our side has only been average at home this season (4-4-1) while the Union have lost five times away from home in 2012 and won once in seven matches. Overall, the Galaxy lead the series 3-0-1 and have won both meetings against Philadelphia at the Home Depot Center.

The Galaxy have two players on three-game point streaks: Landon Donovan (4 goals, 2 assists) and Mike Magee (2 goals, 2 assists). David Beckham, who leads the team in assists with five, is suspended for the match due to yellow card accumulation. A big piece of news from the injury report is that central defender Omar Gonzalez is now questionable for the match after missing the entire season so far while recovering from ACL surgery.

Philadelphia has been playing better since John Hackworth took over as interim coach. The Union have been having a fire sale this year when it comes to players who have been with the team since their inaugural season so the names have changed since the last meeting with L.A. Gabriel Gomez and Lionard Pajoy are tied for the team lead with four goals. Gomez has been very efficient and has scored on 30.8% of his shots this season. However, Jack McInerney can't be overlooked. He's scored two goals in just 240 minutes this season and should be back after missing their last match with a stomach ailment.

Whether or not Gonzalez gets any minutes in the match for L.A., having him back and available to play should give the Galaxy a bit of a boost. I expect the Galaxy to win but I don't think it will be an easy match.
